OLS-57900 Week 8 - Transformational Leadership Theory
Key Takeaway 1: It is your job to create and sustain an amazing team. As a leader you need to make sure the company survives so it can be a force for good in the future. Don't compromise your values or health (Anderson, 2023). This is a great perspective as mission / purpose (i.e., force for good) is my key driver for job satisfaction. And empowerment is a force multiplier in creating and sustaining a team. We are all passionate so it's common we often overlook our physical and mental health. When I start seeing other struggle, I always remind them to "get your oxygen first." As any airline attendant will tell you - in the event of an emergency, get your oxygen mask first before you help others (see Exhibit 1). As much as you want to serve others, serve the mission, serve your clients - if you don't get your oxygen, you won't be able to help anybody.
Key Takeaway 2: How you show up when the chips are down is what people remember (Anderson, 2023). This point of despair is critical to the Hero's Journey (see Exhibit 2).
Key Takeaway 3: Authentic transformational leadership is socialized leadership, which is concerned with the collective good (Northouse, 2019). It requires the following (4I) factors:
Idealized influence
Inspirational motivation
Intellectual stimulation
Individualized consideration
Exhibit 1: Get your oxygen first
Exhibit 2: The Hero's Journey
Analysis: This week's discussion was to select between Transformation Leadership and Hero's Journey. In comparing the two prior to selecting my topic, what I discovered was that they are complimentary. The Hero's Journey is really about internal transformation while Transformational Leadership is about external transformation in leading change within others, your organization, and your mission. In fact, you can often use the Hero's Journey to be more effective in Transformational Leadership as it can offer ingredients to creating idealized influence (I can relate to your motivations and challenges), inspirational motivation (I can't believe you were able to overcome despair), and intellectual stimulation (how can I do something similar).
Application: I like the Hero's Journey map. I think it would be beneficial for me to map out a couple of my challenges / experiences so improve my storytelling and motivate others to join me in the various transformational journeys I understake as I transform my client organizations around the adoption of digital technologies.
